Position Summary
This position is responsible for performing engineering support functions and providing technical assistance with the development of engineering standards, guidelines, studies, calculations, and specifications associated with power system protection.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Support and assist engineers and staff in the preparation, design, and evaluation of power system protection projects
- Collaborate with other technicians and engineers in Substation Engineering, Transmission Line Design, Transmission Planning, Distribution Planning, and Substation Maintenance in matters of system protection
- Assist with maintaining PEC’s system protection philosophy
- Support and participate in commissioning of transmission and distribution protection schemes
- Perform short circuit studies and other calculations for assisting with relay settings and developing reports
- Review short circuit ratings for all PEC-owned substation equipment and ensure all ratings are above short circuit fault levels
- Serve in administrative role for PEC’s relay database software, managing and organizing relay setting storage
- Ensure relay setting documentation and database is up-to-date
- Provide relay settings as needed and load as-left/as-found relay settings utilizing check-in/check- out process
- Maintain documentation relating to system protection referenced by other departments
- Assist engineers with creating projects in software assisted tools for the calculation of transmission line relay settings
- Review distribution and transmission relay events and provide input to engineers
- Understand communications system including power line carrier and fiber optic technology as applied in relay settings

- Research and be familiar with all applicable NERC PRC requirements
- Provide status updates on projects as needed
- Maintain the security of confidential information
- Stay abreast of advances in technology
- Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
- Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned
Supervisory and/or Leadership Responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of using computer systems, entering data, or processing information
- Knowledge of relay protection schemes and control systems
- Knowledge of relay communications principles
- Proficient in reading and understanding schematics and design drawings
- Proficient in system protection related software applications such as AcSELerator QuickSet, SynchroWave, PowerBase 7, and Aspen OneLiner
- Skilled in time management
- Skilled in prioritizing and managing changing priorities
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to listen and understand information verbally and in writing
- Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze and resolve conflict and problems
Minimum Qualifications - (Education, Experience)
- Associate Degree in Engineering field or related field
- Three years related work experience
- Experience may substitute for related education
- Have and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License
